Job Description: Microbiology Supervisor
As the Microbiology Supervisor, you will manage and supervise staff, oversee in-process and finished product testing, and handle fermentation seed culture preparation and testing within the QC department to support manufacturing and research. You will act as a technical expert with extensive knowledge of aseptic procedures. Additionally, you will maximize employee, equipment, and material utilization within budgetary constraints while adhering to quality technical standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Staff Management: Interview, hire, train, and assess staff competency.
- Workflow Management: Plan, schedule, and monitor workflow to meet goals.
- Staff Development: Provide staff development, performance reviews, and corrective counseling.
- Quality Control: Manage daily testing schedules and review internal lab data for accuracy.
- Regulatory Compliance: Lead laboratory investigations and ensure compliance with GLP as Study Director.
- Quality Management: Perform Quality Manager duties in their absence and maintain the Quality Management System (QMS).
- Training: Train personnel on QMS activities and ensure competence of laboratory staff.
- Equipment Oversight: Oversee equipment calibration and maintenance programs.
- Nonconformance Management: Initiate nonconforming work investigations and corrective/preventive actions.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Technical Expertise: Serve as a subject matter expert for aseptic procedures and microbial identification.
- Procurement: Procure supplies and equipment within budget to maximize efficiency.
- Problem-Solving: Provide technical oversight for problem-solving and process improvements.
- Testing and Troubleshooting: Lead testing/troubleshooting to maintain workflow and participate in lab meetings.
- Policy Compliance: Ensure compliance with department and company policies and procedures.
- Quality Goals: Monitor progress towards quality assurance, control, and improvement goals.
- Customer Interaction: Interact with internal/external customers for proper sample handling and reporting.
- Procedure Updates: Contribute to updating procedures and test methods to reflect current practices.
- Training and Development: Participate in supervisory skills training and perform other tasks as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Educational Background: BA/BS in Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field; 7+ years of relevant experience.
- Supervisory Experience: 2-3 years of supervisory experience, including managing direct reports.
- Leadership Skills: Proven leader adept at coaching, mentoring, and developing talent.
- Communication Skills: Good interpersonal communication, public speaking, and writing skills; ability to build relationships needed for program success.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze statistics, identify trends, and perform cost/benefit analysis for efficient allocation of limited resources.
- Technical Knowledge: Experience with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Good Aseptic Technique, bacterial-based assays, and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
