A leading shipbuilding and repair company is seeking a Project Manager to plan, staff, coordinate, and profitably execute complex projects. Projects will range from $500,000 to $5M and may last several weeks/months.
The Project Manager will have the following responsibilities:
- Plans, estimates, negotiates, staffs, directs work, and reconciles final billings on projects. Resolves internal issues for productive and safe project management.
- Meets or exceeds customer expectations for quality, productivity, and safety. Manages customer relationships through scope and price changes to ensure satisfaction and profitable closure.
- Resolves daily issues with customers, owners, Port authorities, and other parties. Represents the company fairly and consistently.
- Works with the Contracting & Estimating Department to estimate, plan, execute, and settle projects. Provides documentation for bill settlement and change orders. Advises on profit opportunities and loss avoidance.
- Interprets specifications, plans project sequencing, and coordinates phases to prevent delays and rework. Ensures proper documentation and approval of change orders.
- Writes timely and accurate job documentation and contributes to final specifications.
- Confers with supervision, project management staff, inspectors, and suppliers to resolve repair problems and improve methods.
- Plans, coordinates, and directs production activities. Ensures appropriate daily staffing and monitors job progress to meet requirements and expectations. Adjusts as necessary.
- Prepares management reports on progress, materials, and costs. Adjusts work schedules based on reports and ensures process adherence.
- Maintains effective relationships with craft workers, customers, and contract administrators. Resolves labor complaints or disputes efficiently.
- Leads post-mortem reviews of completed projects, documents lessons learned, and incorporates best practices into new projects.
- Monitors worker safety and environmental concerns, resolving issues effectively.
- Assesses and documents work performance of direct reports, providing feedback and recommending development activities.
- Remains technically competent and up-to-date with field changes and productivity initiatives.
- Reviews costs, quality, and capability for internal work versus subcontracting. Decides on make-or-buy after thorough analysis.
- Manages subcontractor and vendor performance, setting expectations and holding them accountable.
- Monitors job progress, uses earned value management to identify issues, and forecasts costs. Reports on project performance.
The ideal Project Manager candidate will have the following skillset:
- Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline or equivalent amount of experience.
- 3+ years' experience in project management, preferably in shipbuilding or maritime industry.
- Proven success in planning, staffing, coordinating, and profitably executing complex, multi-trade, labor-intensive, and multi-phased projects.
- Demonstrated financial savvy in labor-intensive projects.
- Strong knowledge of ship systems and construction/repair sequencing, using a systems approach.
- Ability to manage labor in a multi-craft, unionized environment.
- Strong leadership skills, including conflict resolution, decision-making, and inspiring high performance.
- Excellent customer relationship skills, achieving satisfaction without compromising profitability.
- Proficient in contract, specification, and print interpretation.
- Effective communication skills, adept at acquiring knowledge through questioning.
- Expertise in maximizing revenues and profits through negotiation.
- Strong entrepreneurial outlook with a sense of ownership over processes and results.
- Hands-on problem-solving approach and thorough knowledge of the ship and project.
- Capable of handling multiple priorities independently with minimal supervision.
